10 SONGS… (VOL. 14) BY ANYONEGIRL
“10 songs for driving”
Born and based in New Zealand, Yasmine Ganley is the brains, heart, and soul behind anyonegirl, a platform that aims to bridge the gap between a worldwide community of like-minded individuals who bond via their desire and interest to make things (happen).
A trained contemporary dancer, writer, photographer, publisher, and editor of WAIST zine and Island Magazine, Yasmine somehow manages to find the time in her day to mother two young children.
What struck me the most about Yasmine was a simple yet sophisticated aesthetic that appears to traverse all she decides to surround herself with, putting attention and effort into everything she does. Her comfortable, relaxed, practical approach to life and the way she carries herself has to be connected to an upbringing in such a particular part of the world. Although I’d prefer to steer clear of stereotypes, I’ve been positively impressed by many who took their first steps on the shores of Aotearoa.
As an avid reader and closet archivist, she’s left behind a trail of notebooks that she keeps adding to and revisiting. Her father’s box of old family photographs, the new music she finds via her partner Matthew, the retinal consumption of films from which she unapologetically steals screenshots for future reference, and the work of other artists and friends all seem to percolate into everything she becomes involved in. A relentless pursuit that is driven by the desire to seize fleeting moments.
Despite not having forthcoming plans to visit Yasmine’s island nation, her public online output and the playlist she concocted for fig. bring a bit of her world into ours — a compilation of songs that reflect energy in motion and suit a transitional state.
